Ace - $900 - ADOPTED
Ace is an approx 10 year old gelding and does not appear to be broke to ride, you can sit on him and he has been ponied with no problem, he just doesn't seem to know how to "go forward". We will continue working with him until he is adopted. He is a very sweet boy who loves attention. We have video of him being poinied but it won't upload. So we can send it to you if you are interested. **UPDATE** We recently took Ace to the Selkirk Parade, while Kim walked him on a lead, she figured he was quiet enough and decided to hop on. He was fabulous and there were ALOT of people. He was so good, we decided to take him to the Morris Stampede with us. While he did not help us with Drill, he did get what is probably his first bath and was ridden in the Morris parade. He even walked through the midway and past police cars without even caring. |
Appalonia - ADOPTED
($600) mare This 14 year old girl is a darling! While small in stature, she has a huge personality and is a sweet, in your pocket little mare. She stands approximately 14.3 hh, but don't let her little stature fool you - this girl is a powerhouse with speed to burn! Green broke when she came to us, she has been under saddle in an arena most weekends over the winter. She is coming along nicely, but does tend to be a little hesitant going forward when she gets nervous. She has never offered buck or bolt while being ridden. She will be taken to Bird's Hill Park and Spruce Woods for outdoor miles. While not for beginners, this girl would do well with a moderately experienced rider who can help her be confident! She is quiet and easy to handle, with great ground manners, and leads, loads, ties and stands nicely to be trimmed. Whoever gives this diamond in the rough a chance to shine is going to end up with a heck of a gem! |
Bandit - $500 - ADOPTED
Hey there handsome!!!!Bandit is a sweet little 2018 Red Dun yearling colt that came to us because of a not so good situation, but he didn’t let that bother him. Since he came to us, he has always been for first one to come and greet us. He is halter broke and we are working on lifting and holding his feet. This guy has the looks and the charm. He’s going to be a stunner when he’s grown. Please pm for video's because I'm not sure I'll be able to add them in the comments or on here. He has the looks and the brains! Adoption fee five hundred |
Daisy **ADOPTED**
Quarter Horse Filly Daisy came to us as a young underfed, wormy, lice ridden foal in spring 2015, she has blossomed into a beautiful young filly with a personality that will make you smile. She will remain with Blackbird until we feel that she is ready to be adopted. Daisy came with us to the Canvasback Adoption Fair 2015 and did amazingly well |
Blue - **ADOPTED**
($600) - Blue Roan Gelding Blue just came into rescue and will be assessed shortly. He is a Blue Roan gelding, approx 8 - 10 years old. He is broke to ride and 14.3 hands. He does have an old injury of a broken nose, which does not really affect him much. He does get the occasional infection in his sinuses that is easily treatable with a round of antibiotics. He would do better at light riding due to this. **update** March 6/16 - Blu was assessed today and did great. Stood and waited his turn like a champ and was a true gentleman. Blu had a bit of an issue with saddle fit so we opted to take him out bareback. While he showed a bit of insecurity riding solo, he followed a person on foot very willingly and would do well on a group trail ride. |
Captain Jack - **ADOPTED***
Captian is a mid teens Apaloosa with gorgeous blue eyes. He is well broke but will need an expierienced owner. He's got quite a bit of get up and go and does have a bit of anxiety. He will need a home that understands him. He has been ridden in the round pen and his second ride with us was at Birdshill Park. He has some separation anxiety (especially while trailering). He is a very sweet horse and will come to greet you. He has also been ridden on the trails out back and did fantastic, he is very forward and not a dead head |
Clip
13 year old registered Thoroughbred gelding - **ADOPTED** This handsome fellow is Clip. Registered name Slick Dude. 15 year old TB. This boy is an awesome fellow who was very well broke in a previous home. After being sold, he had a few years of sitting idle with another owner until he came to us. With only 2 rides in on him, I chose to take him to the Extreme Cowboy clinic this April. He ROCKED IT! Stalls quietly in a barn, loves the wash rack and getting his baths and has a heart of gold. As a very forward horse he is NOT for beginners and requires someone with experience. A small calcium build up on one knee means that he should not be used for hard work such as jumping or barrels, but is sound for trails and fun events such as we competed in at the clinic. *Available for Adoption* Approx 15.2 hh, and a moderate build. **Update - after the Manitoba Cowboy Extreme, Clip he sat in the field for awhile, we saddled him up and rode him in the Selkirk Rodeo Parade. We have seen no signs of stiffness or lameness at any point with Clip but a vet check can be arranged for the interested parties for an additional fee. |
Dakota - $400 (without gelding, gelding can be added to price)
Dakota is a cute little yearling Appaloosa stud colt that came to us from a not so happy place. He came to us unhandled and very scared. He loves to watch you work with the other horses, and is slowly coming around. He leads very well once he is caught. He will come up and take treats from your hand but is still very wary. In true appy spirit he taking longer to understand that we won’t hurt him. And that he’s safe. We will keep working with him.. He was in the round pen and did have a carrot stick touch him all over and his feet picked up. He has been approaching us now and is looking for attention |
Doodle
($450) will be gelded Doodle is a yearling colt saved at Auction last October. We are unsure of his breeding but guess him to be TB based on his build and crazy long legs. He is a bit shyer than his friend Yankee, but is still a sweet young fellow. He is halter broke, loads and adores being groomed. He does need a bit of patience however when working with his feet but he is getting better every time. He would make a great addition to anyone's herd! Doodle will be available to go to his new home after he has recovered from his gelding which will be done in October. ♡♡♡ |
Duncan - $1200 - ADOPTED
Duncan is a approx 18-20 year old small (just over 14 hh) quarter horse. He is very well broke. Side passes, beautiful stop, works off leg or neck reins. Very light. He was ridden in a bitless bridle. His lope is to die for. He would do best with a child or smaller person due to his size. His first ride out, he was ponying another horse and didn't even miss a hoof beat. He is very sweet. I will try to upload the videos of him loping in the comments **UPDATE* We took Duncan to the Morris Stampede with us and had him help us demonstrate a Drill demo. While we didn't get any pictures or video (we were too busy riding), he did awesome. He also had an Equine Unwinding session with Cindy Andrusiak. He also had a bath! The one thing did notice with Duncan was that while he was kept in the barn with high temperatures, high humidity and shavings, he coughed. This was the first time we have seen him do this since we got him in April but feel that he would do best being either portion fed or fed with nets and to watch him if he stays in a barn. Being housed outside, even with high humidity, he has never shown these symptoms. |
Fancy - Quarter horse filly - $1100 - ADOPTED
Fancy is an approx 2 year quarter horse filly. She is built like a tank and super sweet. She came to us from the September horse auction in Grunthal. We bought her to keep sweet Hazel company as they were pen mates as well as herd mates. Sadly Hazel has to be humanely euthanized due to a perforated bowel. Fancy is super friendly, and easy to catch. She stood tied quietly for over a half an hour yesterday (with no snacks) as we fed some of the skinnies their pellets. Not a peep, not a paw, not a whinny. She did great. We were told that she had ground work done with her and it shows. She was unsure of the saddle pad at first but was saddled without any issues and trotted around. She did great! She’s a looker who make someone an amazing horse especially with her personality. Please note, if you are interested in any of our horses we do request that you fill out an adoption application. This does not mean that you have to adopt the horse it just helps us to see who is serious about the adoption |
Glory *ADOPTED*
($750) Buckskin Mare Glory is a sweet buckskin mare, 15 hh and approx 14 years old. Broke to ride and getting a refresher. She leads and loads and is good with her feet. Glory is currently getting a bit of re-training done when we are able to use the arena. Glory went for a trail ride this past fall right beside a busy highway and did great! *DISCLAIMER* Please note: There is a chance that any mare coming from auction may be pregnant or bred. |
Goliath, 15 years old.
Owner : Barb We are not totally sure of his past but he suffered from trust issues and seems to have a slight fear of men. He has come a long way since he first came to us at Blackbird Ranch. From not being able to approach him to now having him walk up to us willingly in pasture, putting harness on him and even saddling him and sitting on him! He is a big suck and loves his cookies. He may be available for adoption to the right home only and only when and if he is ready. |
Grace (MJ)- ADOPTED
($600) Registered Paint Mare Grace is a registered paint mare. She is a tank of a horse. approx 15-15.1 hh born 2004, registered name MJ Kingette Fritz. She is NOT broke to ride and is quite shy but once in hand is a dream to lead and handle. Leads, ties, loads and good with feet. Once the weather warms a bit more, we are going to start showing her that its ok to be with people. She is constantly watching us work with the other mares. |
Hannah - ADOPTED
($600) mare Hanna is a pretty mare who was originally adopted out about 4 years ago. She's approximately 14.3hh and we guess her age at about 10-12. Unfortunately, due to personal and family circumstances, her current owners were no longer able to give her the time she needed and so we agreed to help her find a new home. She was ridden at her old home bareback and in a halter, but we have not assessed her under saddle yet. It's taken her a few weeks to settle in here, and we did not want to stress her out until she was more comfortable. She is nice to catch and handle in halter, though she did need a refresher on ground manners first. |
Hope
($600) Quarter Horse mare Hope was rescued from auction in 2015, she was a broodmare all of her life and the only reason she was at auction was because the ground was too frozen to bury her, she was no longer of use :( She was very thin and it took Hope quite awhile to want to trust people and choose to be around them. She would always watch from a distance. One day when we were out in pasture getting another horse, Hope decided to follow us to the gate. So we decided to take her out and give her a bit of loving. She did so well, that it was decided to try a saddle blanket, and then a saddle. It was going so well, why not try the bridle! We walked Hope to the front pen and Kim did some up and down and then sat on Hope. Backed her up a couple of steps! She had never had any of this prior to that day. I happened to run into her old owner and told him what we did and he couldn't believe it. Hope is a very smart girl and is very willing to try now that she trusts. *DISCLAIMER* Please note: There is a chance that any mare coming from auction may be pregnant or bred. |
Jane *ADOPTED*
($1200) Thoroughbred mare "Jane" is a 2008 TB mare. Registered name is "Playin' Jane". She last raced in 2011. She is a tall girl, a bit finer in build than her buddy Slew, standing approx 16.1hh, with clean legs and feet. She was purchased as a trail mount a few years ago, but proved to be too much horse for her beginner owners. She was last ridden western 2 summers ago, and has been a pasture ornament since. Has had regular vetting and hoof care, and appears sound and sane. Polite to handle under halter, we have not had a chance to assess her under saddle with all this darn rain... At only 9, this pretty mare has the potential to shine in the show ring, maybe in HUS or dressage! She has a long flowing trot and an elegant carriage and is a very graceful mover. Owner is asking $1200. **update** March 7/16 - Jane was ridden in the front pen today. She would excell in Western dressage with her collected lope and smooth transition. *DISCLAIMER* Please note: There is a chance that any mare coming from auction may be pregnant or bred. |
Jester
($600) **ADOPTED** - gelding Jester is a 9 year old Palomino gelding. He is approx 15.1 hands and is green broke. He is a total sweetheart and very smart. He seems very green but has a lot of try. He was saved at auction. He has been saddled but not backed. He is not for beginners. update - Feb 2016 - we took Jester out to trim him and decided to take him to the snow hill to play. He really enjoyed himself, didn't mind that he wasnt' with the herd and trusted enough to follow Kim up the snowbank. With the right training, this boy will have it all. |
Johnny - $1200
Registered Fjord gelding This handsome fellow is Johnnie Darko and he is available for adoption! Johnnie is a 20 year old registered Fjoird, his registered name is Turtle Mountain Starksy. He will require an experienced home as he is a bit strong minded when he wants to do his own thing, but a very willing partner and he will make a fantastic ride with a bit more refresher! Leads, loads and stands w/o issue for trimming! We are also working on a bit more patience standing tied but he has improved a ton in his last 3 sessions . This is what we were able to accomplish after many years of him sitting on pasture at his old home with little formal training....1 arena ride, 2 rides in Spruce woods, and we pulled him out of the corral on Sunday and asked him to participate in a train robbery and Johnny helped us ride in a drill demo at the Morris Stampede! A big, willing heart in this boy! Johnny’s sister Jenna is also available for adoption and would love to go to the same home as him as they have lived together their whole lives. While we know adopting them out together is a near impossible task, we would still like to try. We will consider splitting them up, but ONLY to the right homes. |
Leena
($600) Registered Quarter Horse Mare Leena is a 2004 chestnut QH mare, registered name SONOITA JUNO STAR. She is a sweet mare who came to us for rehab after she was removed from a neglectful home. Scoring about 2 on the Henneke scale for body condition, Leena spent the spring and summer at our most trusted Foster's house for some extra 1 on 1 time. She stands approximately 14.3 hh, and has a quiet nature. She was only used as a broodmare and is not broke to ride, but she is halter broke, leads, loads and ties like a champ and is good with her feet. She is in good health and has recovered her weight well, and is a sweet girl who only wants attention. However, due to the poor quality hay she was given to eat at her previous home, she does have a slight case of heaves. She does well on good quality hay either soaked or in a proper hay net and loves soaked pellets. |
Little Jake - $500 - ADOPTED
Little Jake is a red roan 2 year old colt. he is a sweetheart. We believe he is out of an MJ mare as they were very bonded when they arrived and he was trying to nurse. He came from a not so good situation, but that doesn't matter to him now! He was on the very shy side when he first arrived. He does have a small hernia that the vet said will be easy to fix when he's being gelded. UPDATE: Little Jake was taken to Canvasback Adoption Days and hung out with the ponies. He took everything in stride and loaded nicely on the trailer. He is sure a sweetheart that comes over to you as soon as he sees you. He is a charmer! **update - Jake has been saddled but not backed and he did greate!. If you are interested in any of our adoptables, please fill out an adoption contract (this by no means makes you have to adopt that horse, it just helps us to know how is serious so that we can make arrangements |
Luna - $700 - ADOPTED
**UPDATE** Luna was brought to Canvasback Adoption days and did very well. She was saddled and didn't appear to know anything but took it in stride. She loved visiting with everyone. She does need some work on tieing but it shouldn't take much.** Luna is an approximately 10 year old mare who came to us thru a Provincial Vet seizure. She stands about 14.3 HH. She carries an MJ brand on her left hip but has no paperwork so her registered name is unknown. This pretty grey girl is as friendly as they come, loves treats and leads nicely. She is working on loading, tying and having her feet handled as she was left in pasture as a broodmare with minimal care, but is comong along in small steps. She walks beautifully on a lead. |
Muffin - $400 - ADOPTED
Muffin is a spritely 2 year old chesnut pony filly who came to us pretty much unhandled. She has come a long way and loves people now, and will happily stand for scratches, pets, brushing and has her second trim, and was a very patient girl. She is a fancy mover who would look adorable as a cart pony or a child’s mount when she is old enough. |
Nova - **ADOPTED**
($600) Standbred Mare Nova just arrived this weekend and will be assessed shortly, she is said to be broke, she took the saddle pad and saddle like a pro. She is 14.2 hands and a Standard Bred mare. She takes a bit to get caught, but already we were making strides in just one day. She is a bit dominant, she will need a firm handler that doesn't let her get away with being boss. **update** March 6/16 - Nova was assessed today and was a sweet girl. She is getting easier and easier to catch and it only took about 5 minutes today. She was tacked up and nothing phased her. She was ridden in the front pen and proved herself a nice broke girl during her assessment, just plow/direct reined and leg pressure but a willing heart and head. |
Oberon (Obie) - $ 1300
Obie is a 2000 model Percheron gelding. He stands about 16.3 HH and is almost built as wide as he is tall. He is broke to drive, and is currently going under saddle training. While a true gentle giant, Obie is fairly shy and lacks confidence. He isn’t used to be pampered or given treats, but is starting to enjoy one on one time and his grooming sessions. He will need an owner with experience who can help him build himself up, and guide him on a confident manner. He would not be suitable for a nervous or green rider. |
Ollie - **ADOPTED**
($TBD) Thoroughbred gelding Look at this handsome hunk! Meet Ollie, registered name Toucans Jack. Born in 2012, he had a short-lived race career thru no fault of his own. After coming up to Canada in May 2016, he had an eye removed due to infection. As he was recovering from that, he contracted West Nile in August 2016, and shortly after managed to catch a leg in some wire. Thanks to a very dedicated and loving groom, his recovery has been nothing short of remarkable. We were contacted by the wonderful Jan Melnychuk about this sweet guy earlier this spring and we couldn't resist that adorable, hammy face of his and so took Ollie into our adoptable program in March. Let me tell you, that lack of an eye doesn't bother him one bit. He is smooth on the ground, and very good to handle. He loads and stands beautifully for his trims, and stole the heart of our barefoot guru Michele Czebotarenku. His under saddle training has begun and he will make someone a wonderful trail partner. As per the vet, he can not do any competitive riding/eventing but could do some flatwork. If this boy has caught your eye, please contact Blackbird Ranch Equine Rescue and Rehab!!! |
Poco - ADOPTED
($TBD) 4-6 year old gelding *approx. age* Grunthal auction - Sept 13th. He was very sweet and had a very kind eye. We were able to sit on him in the pen and he couldn't have cared less. Not sure if/how well broke he is but he will definitely be easy to train. He has that amazing try hard, people pleasing personality. |
|
Prince - ADOPTED
($785) 6-10 year old Paint gelding *approx. age* Grunthal auction - Sept 13th. Lead through the riding ring. Has never been away from his farm, he was born and raised there. According to his owner, he has done lots of trail rides and is well broke. He was nervous at the auction, but was very approachable and i did sit on him in the pen. |
Rascal - ADOPTED
($400) 2 year old molly mule She stands approx 12.5 hh. She is very people oriented and has been saddled by her previous owner tho not ridden. She is easy to catch when she wants to be and loves to be scratched and petted. She does come with a warning - She has gone after and killed cats/dogs and does not like goats. She may be ok with sheep. She would make an awesome herd protector for someone, and/or a good little riding/pack mule in an home with no dogs/cats/goats! |
Raven - TBD
Raven is a beautiful little girl that came from auction in October 2017. She is very fearful of people but slowly coming around. She will take treats from people and when she sees you coming will nicker to you. We have been working on gaining her trust. She is approx 2 years old and possibly a morgan cross. She was very thin coming into rescue but is blossoming :) She watches you interact with other horses and we believe this is helping her along. Last week we were able to pet her neck and shoulder without halter or lead. *DISCLAIMER* Please note: There is a chance that any mare coming from auction may be pregnant or bred. |
Rosie - *ADOPTED*
Rosie is an approx 10 year old Appaloosa/Quarter Horse mare that came in from the PVO with Gulliver. She is a very sweet mare that was very wary when she first got here earlier in the week but is already coming up for snacks and to greet you. She appears to have some Appaloosa in her due to the marbling on her mouth and hind end. This is thin at the moment but will be a tank of a mare. She maybe bred as she was in loose with studs and we will have her preg checked shortly. She picks up her front feet with a little coaxing but I'm sure this is an adjustment for her. We will start assessing her once the weather breaks and I'm sure she will shine! (excuse her dustiness, we just took her blanket off for pictures) **update, Rosie wanted to come out for treats today and was fabulous! She stuck her nose right into her halter, and we picked up all of her hooves. She seems like an old pro :) We took her into the front pen and she is very respectful and went for a little trot. She is very calm in nature and was not phased with anything we did. We are pretty sure she is broke but will not be available for adoption until she has her pregnancy check. Her hooves are in bad need of a trim and will be trimmed shortly. *DISCLAIMER* Please note: There is a chance that any mare coming from auction may be pregnant or bred. |

He leads, loads, ties and stands beautifully to be trimmed and has been kept barefoot. We will be putting some trail miles on him the next few weeks at Bird's Hill Park and Spruce Woods, and working on some desensitizing and confidence building. For anyone looking for an equine partner with the heart and build to go in any direction, this is the boy for you. He isn't just good looks!!! Contact us to meet this gorgeous fella! DON'T LET ROANIE BE THE ONE THAT GOT AWAY! ;) |

He side passes, neck reins, yields to leg pressure and has beautiful W/T/C transitions with a rocking chair lope. He has an amazing "Whoa" and is very focused on what is being asked of him. Was great ridden in the arena and would excell in a home wanting to put his energy into a light task or job. As per some information recieved from a previous owner who recognized his photo: - Has done barrels - Was ridden extensively for years on trails as a 'husband horse' - Was shown western pleasure - Was shown in some reining He was also owned by Brenda Rinnenberg Gauthier from 1995 to 2007. He would be suitable for an intermediate rider as he is no deadhead and has lots of energy. |

Tink is a mid teens Alberta Wildie. She is halter broke but is hard to catch. She is wary of people. She is available to an experienced home. Wow, do we have a story for you!!!! Kim was scrolling through Facebook one day and decided to put a post on WHOAS (Wild Horses of Alberta) to see if anyone knew Tink or would be interested in her. Low and behold, someone answered her and said she would recognize her anywhere, and that she has a mare (was a filly at the time) from the same herd and she lives in Manitoba. And it turns out that she is married to Corinne's mechanic. Talk about a small world. She has photos of her mare and Tink as yearlings together in Alberta after they were rounded up Velvet **ADOPTED**
