Lily - 2015
Lily was saved from auction in 2015. She sat in a pen by herself heavey and lonely. Unfortunately Lily's heaves did not get any better and it was decided that Blackbird Ranch would help her cross the bridge. With many of her volunteer friends around her, she was laid to rest with the help of Equitech Veterinary. The last gift we could give her was to be loved and pain free. Run like the wind Lily. |
Ginger (aka Granny) - 2015
Granny relinquished from her previous owner. Granny was 40 years old. She had cushings and in the fall of 2015 it was just too much for her poor body to keep going on. She was loved and cherished until she was helped to cross the bridge. Again, thank you to Equitech Veterinary. |
Fergus - 2015
Fergus was relinquished to Blackbird Ranch by his previous owners. He had a terrible case of scoliosis, although this did not stop him from running around and playing. He was quite a little ham and his time on earth was far too short. One day he decided he needed to go, so he laid down. He was made comfortable, and with his human friends by his side, he was helped to cross the bridge. We will see you again one day Fergus. |
Jax - 2016
Jax was resuced from auction in 2015 and adopted out. Through no fault of his own, he came back to Blackbird Ranch, where he lived until we helped him cross the bridge. Jax was still a youngish man who suffered from arthritis. Once it got to be too much for him we chose to let him cross over to be pain free |
Twist - 2016
Twist was saved at auction in June of 2015. She is a registered Paint mare that has had a broken pelvis at some point and time. Twist is a great "mom" to the babies that we bring in. She is a sweet mare and will remain at Blackbird until she tells us its time and her mobility gets too bad. But as of right now, she is happy and was even running and kicking the other day :) update: Spring of 2016, Twists injuries were starting to bother her and we decided that she would be better off living at The Rainbow Bridge. |
Pippin - 2016
Grunthal auction - Sept 13th 2014 She is an older Arab mare (in her late 20s). She has a slight sway back but it broke to ride. The first 2 pictures are Pippin when she was first brought from auction, the third was taken January 2016 Pippin's age was finally catching up to her and it was hard for her body to keep the nutrition that she was being fed. It was a hard choice to make, especially since she was always still so full of spunk and love. As soon as she would see you, she would nicker and come trotting over. Rest easy now my girl, we will meet again some day. |
Cass - 2017
Cass pictured on the right was brought into rescue when her owners could no longer care for her due to health reasons. Cass herself is close to 30 years old. Cass lived with a goat for most of her life and once at Blackbird Ranch made Dusty her new best friend! Sadly it seems that this will be Cass's last fall with us as her health is starting to fail, please help her have a wonderful last couple months. |
Jones - 2017
aka Mr. Jones has been a permanent fixture at Blackbird Ranch for quite some time, this old fella (approx 24 years young) loves to steal hearts. Blind in one eye and loosing sight in the other, this guy still gets around just fine. Sadly, Mr. Jones arthritis is getting to be too much for him and is starting to cause him some pain. This will be the last fall for Mr. Jones at the ranch. Can you help him out and give him some love these last couple of months? |
Nana - 2017
(Older Pasa Fino Mare) picture to follow. Nana is 30 years old and surrendered with Hannah when family commitments became too much to give them the time required. Nana is a sweet old gal, that have come to trust the Blackbird Ranch volunteers and now comes to greet us all with a nicker. Or else hanging with her best friend Jones. Sadly this looks as if it will be Nana's last fall due to old age. Can you help her enjoy her last couple of months, donations are welcome. |

Cody - 2017
Cody came to us from his owner that could no longer care for him at home. He was a sweet soul and loved by everyone that met him. |
|
Porsche (aka Wheezy) - 2017
Grunthal auction - Sept 13th. She had a horrible opinion of people but that has changed since arriving at Blackbird. It seems Wheezy has had a broken nasal cavity at some point, and will live out her days at Blackbird. She has done a 360 and now loves to be scratched and petted. In fact if you get her "right in that spot" she will throw her head up and sound a lot like a whale because she's enjoying it so much! |
Juno - 2018
Owner : Blackbird Ranch (Permanent Resident) Surrendered to us. Very sweet, trusting little guy who suffers from Equine Reccurent Uveitis. Juno was laid to rest early 2018. He was our spokesperson and everyone that met him, fell in love with him. A huge thank you to Michelle from Michelle's Barefoot Hoof Trimming for helping make Juno comfortable for as long as he was with us. If it wasn't for her, we would have had to make the hard decision much earlier. Juno never gave up and never knew he had a disability. He would follow your voice and nicker to say "hi" as he wandered over to you. Rest in Peace Sweet Boy, we do what we do, so that horses like you have a soft place to land and live the rest of their lives out with love, compassion and treats. Til we meet again. |
Krinkle - 2018
Krinkle was saved at auction in October of 2017. She was in a pen with many yearlings and as cranky as could be. Turns out, she was trying to protect the others in the pen with her. We purchased Krinkle because her knees has such bad arthritis, they were 3 times the size they should be. It took only a short time after she got home to Blackbird that she started showing who she really was. She took the scared filly that was also picked up at auction at the same time under her wing and took care of her and made sure nobody would pick on her. Sadly, Krinkle's time with us was not long. We knew that when we picked her at auction, but her knee's were so bad and she had trouble getting around, we kept her comfortable so that she could enjoy her last months, with love and pets and good hay and pellets. This way when it came her time, we went with dignity. |
Dolly - 2019
Please meet Dollie, registered name Silly Sally. She is a 1995 edition, and is looking for a new home with a small, light rider. This girl is as broke as they come, with the sweetest, most willing disposition and would be beginner friendly. We believe she would love her own little girl, to groom her and feed her treats and take her on trail rides and maybe to some shows as she is quite the princess. Dollie was turned over to us for rehab from Animal Protection and has been vaccinated with 5-way, had her teeth floated and had her second trim. She is sound, however like any senior horse, she would benefit from a joint supplement and high quality feed. |
Jenna - 2019
Registered Fjord Mare Jenna, aka “Turtle Mountain Jenna” is a petite little 1999 model Fjord mare. While she stands a diminutive 14 HH, her huge, sweet personality shines through and captures your attention. Also, she will mug you and rifle through your pocket for treats… Jenna lived a life of luxury with her brother Johnny as well kept pasture puffs, spoiled and loved. After a tragic family circumstance, both came into our care for rehoming. Jenna leads, loads and ties, and stands quietly for saddle and bridle. She is currently being broke to ride and would be suitable at this time for a smaller experienced rider only. |
Clyde - Blackbird Ranch Resident - 2019
Clyde came from Grunthal Auction, we tried to bid on him but sadly was outbid by the meat buyer. A plea went out to the community and a wonderful lady from Strays that Can't Pay posted on their facebook page and soon the donations came rolling in. Alicia (that wonderful lady) contacted the meat buyer and after what seemed like a long wait (to all of us anyway), he agreed to hand over Clyde to Alicia, who in turn wanted him to be with us. Easily at least 300 lbs under weight, he walked right onto our trailer and onto a new life. His hooves were grossly over grown on top of his weight issue. This was no problem for our trimmer Michelle and a great team of volunteers. Clyde is one of ambassadors for the rescue, he stands for what we do and believe in. He is said to be 17 years old, an old show horse, that was no longer needed. He is trained to pull single, double, 4, 6 and unicorn. He has come a long way and now knows how it feels to be loved. |
FRANKLIN - Draft Mule - 2019
This huge guy is Franklin or Frank for short. He is a giant shire mule and is just the sweetest guy! He LOVES people until you try and touch his feet then LOOK OUT! He'll follow you around all day long. You could be walking along and all of a sudden he's right behind you, like a giant ninja! |
Noble - 2020
Noble is a thoroughbred that was saved at auction from going to the meat man in 2014. He is another one of Blackbird Ranches mascots. He came in with almost no meat or muscle left on his bones, he has blossomed into a trusty steed! Tall and Proud, his nickname is Sticks. He is so full of trust now and will come and rest his head on your shoulder. He has been saddled but not ridden and will live out his years at Blackbird Ranch. |
Handsome Joe - Thoroughbred - 2020
Handsome Joe AKA JS NIGHTSLINGER is a 2012 Bay Thoroughbred gelding who stands 15.2-15.3 hh. He leads, loads, ties and stalls quietly, and is a gentleman in hand. Joe came off the track in August 2017 with a slab fracture to his left knee, but after almost 2 years of rest and rehab has been vetted as sound. As a precaution, he will only go to a trail or fun show home, not anything competitive. Joe has ridden trails, placed 3rd in an in-hand trail class, ridden in a parade and travelled through the streets of Stonewall on a hunt for Tim Horton’s and ice cream since his days on the track. After his extended rehab he is still learning how to “horse”, and will need someone with a soft hand and a bit of patience to help him explore more new experiences, but we expect he will bloom into a fearless partner for the right person. |
Maggie May - 2021
**UPDATE** Maggie May was brought to Canvasback Adoption Days this September and did wonderfully. She loaded beautifully and stood tied. One of our younger volunteers hopped on her with a halter and rode her in the pen. She was nervous due to the amount of people and dogs and announcements, but was a good girl** Maggie May is an older mare, most likely in her mid to late teens that came to us from auction this April. She stands approximately 15 hh and is quite a big-bodied horse. Maggie is a bit of a timid girl with some trust issues. She can be hard to catch and is very head shy. However, once caught, she is a lovely girl to handle from head to toe. She leads, loads, and ties nicely, and statnds patiently for grooming. We were informed at auction that she is most likely bred, as the "seller" left her in with a stud for an undertermined length of time. She has not yet been preg tested as of yet due to her trust issues. We were also told she was well broke to ride and watched the "seller" attempt to ride her in the ring in the condition of her intake photos. A poor fitting saddle and horrible feet did not make for a successful demo and felt so badly for this poor girl, we couldn't leave her behind. This sweet mare will need someone willing to be patient and who will spend lots of one-on-one time with her, but whoever decides to take the chance and win her trust will end up with a beautiful equine partner |
Rolo - 2021
Rolo was saved at Auction. He came in with a severely deformed leg. He was quite the gentleman and loved everyone. He must have been quite horse in his younger years. Sadly, Rolo's leg was too far gone to be comfortable for him and after a severe bout of Laminitis, Rolo crossed the bridge |
Doe - 2022
Doe was a very timid little pony that came to us quite feral and was with us for a number of years. She's been caught and is actually halter broke. Very wary of people but nickers as soon as she sees you hoping for a cookie. Doe had only one eye but that didn't stop her! Sadly, Doe's age finally caught up with her |
Gracie - 2022
Gracie is a Brabant cross who is in her late teens, and was used as a brood mare. She is quiet to handle, leads and loads nicely and is ok with her feet. She stands about 16.3 HH. She is green broke to ride and we have ridden her on the trails. She walks out alone or in a group, no buck or bolt and is very quiet under saddle |
